Jewellery Remodelling and Jewellery Valuation
As jewellery designers we frequently undertake jewellery remodelling and jewellery valuations, although our primary activity is in creating new pieces of contemporary jewellery for our stock and to commission.
Jewellery Remodelling
We are often asked by our clients to undertake jewellery remodelling. Did you know that jewellery can be broken up and the materials used to make new pieces of jewellery?
Many people have items of jewellery that they never wear tucked away in drawers. It might be because it is old fashioned, no longer fits, or is just worn out or broken. This is a waste! The precious metals and stones in them could be worth a lot of money, so why not make use of them?
Jewellery remodelling is different in each case. It might involve breaking down a large item of jewellery into several smaller, more wearable pieces, or amalgamating several small items into one more important piece. In some cases it is just a case of taking an old diamond ring and remounting the stone in a more modern setting. A collection of gold bits and pieces, such as worn-out rings, odd earrings or cuff links, spare bracelet links etc we can melt it all down and create a new piece of modern jewellery out of what is essentially rubbish. If there is not enough, we can supply extra gold as required. Jewellery remodelling can mean you get a new piece of jewellery for the cost of the labour. Family heirlooms can be redesigned, so you keep the sentimental value attached to the original materials.

Jewellery Valuation for Insurance Purposes
When we sell a piece of handmade jewellery, we automatically supply a free valuation for insurance purposes. We also carry out insurance valuations on other pieces, and for this we charge 1% of the value, plus V.A.T. Where possible items are cleaned using an ultrasonic cleaner prior to valuation (exceptions include watches and pearls) and checked for damage, loose stones, worn claws etc. If required we will quote to carry out any necessary remedial work.
Jewellery should be re-valued every few years, to ensure that sufficient insurance cover is in place. The valuation will include a detailed description of the item, so that in the event of loss or damage, it can be replaced with an item as similar as possible, or where this is not possible a piece of jewellery of equal value. When items are returned in subsequent years for revaluation, we base our charge on the increase in value since the last valuation, rather than on the total value.
alterations and repairs
As jewellery designers we are often called upon to make alterations to clients' jewellery. Sometimes jewellery remodelling is not required, and minor changes are sufficient to achieve the desired effect.
From tightening a loose stone, to re-tipping all the claws and replacing the shank of a ring, we undertake whatever repairs are required.
If a stone is lost we can source a replacement. Where this is connected with an insurance claim, we supply written estimates, and can speak to insurers if required.
